Alessi: Ethical and Radical
Founded in 1921, Alessi is celebrated for making household objects that also serve as art. AN EAKINS MASTERPIECE RESTORED: SEEING THE GROSS CLINIC ANEW
After a passionate campaign to keep it in Philly, Thomas Eakins’ Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic) was purchased by the art museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2007. Newly restored, the unveiling of the once hot-button painting— depicting Gross giving instruction in a surgical amphitheater, bloody scalpel in hand—has garnered national press. Through Jan. 9. WOODFORD MANSION
This 18th-century Georgian mansion used to be the country manor of wealthy patriot William Coleman. Today it’s part of the city, swallowed up by Philly’s expansion, but the old home has been maintained as it was in its glory years, complete with antique furnishings and preserved artifacts from the 18th and 19th centuries.
