AN EAKINS MASTERPIECE RESTORED: SEEING THE GROSS CLINIC ANEW

After a passionate campaign to keep it in Philly, Thomas Eakins’ Portrait of Dr. Samuel D. Gross (The Gross Clinic) was purchased by the art museum and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2007. Newly restored, the unveiling of the once hot-button painting— depicting Gross giving instruction in a surgical amphitheater, bloody scalpel in hand—has garnered national press. Through Jan. 9.
