  • Simply New York Marketplace & Gifts

The concept at this eclectic gift shop is that every item, from flatware to fleece jackets to stuffed animals, was made right here in the Empire State. The food items alone could fill a suitcase—perhaps a Tough Traveler carry-on, made in Schenectady, New York. Brands include Catskill Craftsmen, Buffalo Games, Niagara Ceramics and Brooklyn Bagel Slicer, to name a few. (9/2011)

  • Panache Vintage & Finer Consignment

This shop is prime territory for fashionistas who like designer labels at discount prices. A little digging might turn up Armani slacks, a Marc Jacobs top or an Eileen Fisher skirt for under $40. Those whose retro impulses lean to 1950s Hollywood will also have fun. (9/2011)

  • The Record Archive

The underground impulse that launched this music store in the 1970s lives on in extensive shelves of vinyl. An indie sensibility also peppers the CD bins, which share floor space with VHS tapes, vintage clothing and kitschy gift items. (9/2011)

  • Genesee Country Village & Museum

Potters and blacksmiths and cooks, oh my! Costumed interpreters pursue oldfashioned occupations in the historic buildings of this 19th-century village, while events such as the Old-Time Fiddlers' Fair (Aug. 20-21) with over 100 musicians on three stages enliven the weekends. Still, kids will probably remember the candy store best. (9/2011)
