THE OCTAGON MUSEUM

The former home of Col. John Tayloe III, this irregular—though not actually eight-sided— building is a National Historic Landmark because it represents a break from the Georgian building tradition of the midto late-1700s. It now houses the oldest museum in the country devoted to architecture and design. (03/2010)
