Q&A BY PIERS TOWNLEY

Stunning architecture, nightlife to write home about, beautiful surroundings and friendly folk... every month, AirTran Airways Crew Members reveal what they love best about their chosen city.

Flight router Patrick Deeriver has lived in Philadelphia for over 18 years, hailing it as one of the best cities in the world. He explains why.

What makes the city so special?

Philadelphia is often overlooked since it is sandwiched between New York and Washington, DC, and people often miss out on an awesome experience. One could say that Philadelphia combines the history of Washington, DC and the cosmopolitan feel of New York City. But what really makes this city tick is its small community feel. Each area has its own feel because some of the families have been there for generations.

Where can you go to experience some of the real flavor of the city?

Take a stroll at the Reading Terminal Market in South Philadelphia, and experience the wide variety of foods available from around the world. Next, venture into the Old City, where you will come face to face with the historic side of the city, from cobble-stoned streets to old restored homes. Philadelphia also offers a wonderful selection of museums. The Franklin Institute is a renowned science museum that will teach you almost everything. And at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, you will come across wonderful modern and contemporary works.

It's a city of feasting, so where do you recommend?

This city is filled with amazing dining experiences for all budgets. If you feel like splurging, a meal at Le Bec-Fin will surely be the best one you have ever had. On the other end of the spectrum, you have to visit Pat's Steaks. Be sure to ask for everything with the cheez whiz. This greasy, wonderful delight is a Philly must! And if you feel more in the casual/ elegant mood, try the Tangerine restaurant. There you can dine in the ambiance of the Old City and enjoy French and Mediterranean food. Monk's Café is another must. This Belgian style café will amaze you with its huge variety of beers. In fact, they have so many that they provide a beer bible for the customers! Also, be sure to try the Belgian mussels.

If you're not staying long?

If you are in the city for a short time, then these few activities will offer a brief insight into the essence of Philadelphia:
1. You must check out the Liberty Bell and the Independence Hall.
2. Even if you don't manage to get inside the Philadelphia museum of art... be sure to run up the steps like Rocky.
3. Go and see a Phillies baseball game at the new Citizens Bank Park.
4. Of all the places to eat, don't miss out on the best bite of your life at Pat's Steaks.

Any tips for finding your bearings when you first arrive?

Philadelphia can easily be reached from the airport within 30 minutes or less. The most economical way is to take the local transit ?SEPTA.? This will take you right into the famous 30th Street station, and from there you can either walk or take a cab to wherever you want to go. The best time to visit, weather-wise, is from April to October. Summers can be hot while fall is cool and crisp. Remember, if you are here for a short time, just stick to the list above, and that will give you the full feel of the City of Brotherly Love.
