In the ’20s and ’30s, a regular Saturday night fire dive was watched by thousands of residents. Local daredevils, such as Harold “Buddy” Siegel and Al Pinaire, would have a fuel-soaked rag lit around their necks before diving from the Murdock Street Bridge into the water 70 feet below.
Wichita is deservedly nicknamed the “Air Capital of the World.” By 1929, the city had 11 airports and 16 factories producing one quarter of all the aircraft built in the US. It is now home to five major aircraft manufacturers.
America’s first branch of Pizza Hut was established in the city in 1958 when entrepreneurial brothers Frank and Dan Carney borrowed $600 from their mom to start up the business. The original “Hut” is still there on Wichita State University campus.
