Hosted by the Miami-Dade College, it has become one of the most exciting street fairs for all things book-related. There is a small fee for entrance to the fair grounds ($5), and the rest of the event is free. American Indian Film Festival
San Francisco
November 5-12
An important cultural event looking at the history of American Indian filmmaking and how the medium can help to reinforce a greater understanding of social, racial and political issues in future generations. The annual festival, which takes place during American Indian Heritage Month (see also page 34), draws an audience of around 5,000 and is now in its 30th year. www.aifisf.com
State Street Thanksgiving Parade

Since 1934, the Chicago Thanksgiving Parade has grown to attract more than 350,000 to the city streets every year. Whatever the weather in the Windy City, expect to see fantastically huge inflatables and floats out in force. Georgia Shakespeare Festival
Atlanta November 3-6
The Georgia Shakespeare Company produces the Bard’s classics to a very high standard, but they also cover more modern works by Arthur Miller, Tennessee Williams and Anton Chekhov to wide acclaim in their state-of-the-art theater. This fall, they stick with their Elizabethan roots, however, playing out the romantic tragedy of Romeo and Juliet to its inevitable conclusion. www.gashakespeare.org
MLS Cup Final

The newly opened Pizza Hut Park in Dallas is the venue for this year’s Major League Soccer Cup Final. The event is a nail-biting end to the league’s 10th successful season, and is undoubtedly the match of the season. The Chocolate Show

This event at Manhattan’s Metropolitan Pavilion is the melting pot for all things chocolate. The 8th annual confectionery spectacular invites members of the public to meet the chocolate makers and learn about different styles, recipes and chocolate etiquette. There are also over 50 demonstrations from renowned pastry chefs and an exhibition on the art of chocolate. Children under 12 go free. www.chocolateshow.com
