Hotel Teatro brings boutique luxury—and a touch of theater—to the heart of downtown Denver.

WORDS BY DeMarco Williams

With unique packages appealing to everyone from guests with pets to those who just want to enjoy a romantic getaway, the business traveler isn’t the only one who can enjoy the Frette linen and goose-down quilting at Denver’s luxurious Hotel Teatro.

Built in 1911, the hotel started life as the old Denver Tramway Company building.

In the mid '90s, architects began the conversion to boutique hotel, retaining the building’s inherent elegance.

Today, it exudes style and warmth, from the cherry wood furniture to the carefully conserved red glazed bricks of the exterior.

Step inside, and a pale pink marble floor spans the entrance, leading to a salon offering International Italian cuisine and Prima, one of the hotel’s two lauded restaurants. (The renowned Restaurant Kevin Taylor is also housed here.)

With a location that could only be more appreciated by theater enthusiasts if it were bang in the middle of 42nd Street, the aptly named Hotel Teatro (Italian for “theater”) lies directly across the way from The Denver Center for the Performing Arts. Costumes and photographs of past shows abound, while framed posters promote current productions and future shows. Theater packages are, of course, available.

Hotel Teatro’s 111 guest rooms and suites present a relaxing mix of newage sanctuary and new-school sass.

A Buddha statue and other feng shui-approved symbols from the East grace the entrance, and an Indonesian sandstone-paved foyer leads to a spacious room featuring 12-foot ceilings, a working center and plush lounge area. A gorgeous bathroom—stocked with Aveda products and complete with rain shower—beckons.

Add into the mix the majestic Rocky Mountain backdrop, and it’s no wonder the Zagat Survey and Travel + Leisure have run out of glowing adjectives to describe the Hotel Teatro. Standing ovations all round.
