Atlanta is a city bursting with culture, from thought-provoking exhibits and theatrical productions to classical concerts and dance performances.

Atlanta Arts Festival
Sept. 12-14

Once upon a time, the Piedmont Park Arts Festival was an annual institution. The local arts community has long mourned its passing, but this new festival, which premiered last year, is filling that void. More than 200 artists from across the US will compete in the juried exhibition at Piedmont Park, displaying everything from glass art and paintings to woodworking and folk art. Live music and food vendors help make it a family-friendly affair. www.atlantaartsfestival.com

Les Misérables
Sept. 19-28

Based on Victor Hugo's novel, this Tony Award-winning musical follows several lives over a 20-year period in early 19th-century France. Centered around ex-con Jean Valjean, the epic touches on concepts from good versus evil to justice, religion and love. No wonder it's the world's longest-running musical. It's playing at The Fox Theatre and being presented by AirTran Airways-sponsored Theater of the Stars. www.theaterofthestars.com

Black Box Improv Festival
Sept. 24-28

Now in its fifth year, this festival attracts troupes from across the US, including members of San Francisco's 3 For All, Minneapolis' Drum Machine (a one-woman musical), and local Atlanta teams such as Dad's Garage Theatre and Laughing Matters. With five nights of performances and three days of workshops, it's the city's biggest comedy festival, taking place at DramaTech Theatre on the Georgia Tech Campus. www.bbif.atlantaimprov.com

Emanuel Ax
Sept. 25-28

Polish-born pianist Emanuel Ax emerged in the '70s as one of the world's most respected musicians. Known for his diverse repertoire and affinity for contemporary composers, Ax has collaborated with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and the duo won three Grammys. He'll open the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra season with Bach/Stakowski's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 3 and Brahms' Symphony No. 1. www.atlantasymphony.org
