CHILD'S PLAY

The kids will love what these family-friendly resorts have to offer

BY JOEL ROZEN —

THE SARASOTA/BRADENTON AREA'S LUXURY HOTELS have much to offer the adult set, with tango mixers and cocktail hours becoming staple amenities. But many parents are faced with a dilemma: What do the kids do while mom and dad are at play? Fortunately, some resorts know how to entertain the whole family-and the kid-friendly options, from organized field trips to poolside games, are only increasing. Here are some of the best:

LIDO BEACH RESORT

Starting in mid-January, the palatial Lido Beach Resort in Sarasota will liven up its "family pool" with daily lunchtime activities that are perfect for the kids. Whether it's a crafts project like glazing sea-shells or a tots-specific cooking class, the little ones are sure to love the event. The whole affair only lasts an hour, but that's easily time enough for parents to take in some shopping at nearby St. Armand's Circle or visit the hotel's azure, adult-only pool. You might also consider sticking around for some family bonding.

THE RITZ-CARLTON, SARASOTA

The "Ritz Kids" program keeps kids ages 5 to 12 entertained for a funfilled three or six hours. Typically, kids travel via shuttle to the hotel's beach club, where counselors await with lots of fun activities, from games to crafts. In season, they can go on a "turtle time" tour, led by scientists trained at Sarasota's Mote Marine Laboratory, to look for sea turtle eggs. There are also themed evening activities, like "Pirate Nights" guided treasure hunts, giving parents the opportunity to indulge in a romantic dinner.

THE COLONY BEACH & TENNIS RESORT

Kids will swoon over The Colony Beach's award-winning selection of family programs. Kids ages 5 to 12 can catch the popular (and free) "Kidding Around" program. It offers activities ranging from fishing to crafts projects to scavenger hunts. For the kids who would rather hit the courts, the resort's "Tiny Tots Tennis" program offers light-handed lessons to those ages 3 to 6. There are even outdoor activities and sports for hard-to-please teens.
