SOUL SURVIVOR

Something funky is going on in Detroit this year as Motown Records celebrates its 50th anniversary.

In 1959, when Berry Gordy Jr. created Tamla Records-better known as Motown Records-and opened Hitsville, USA, he knew he was on to something big. But no one could have predicted just how influential the soulful tunes put out by his label would be. Fifty years later, the legacy of Motown continues to shape the musical landscape.

The actual anniversary is on Jan. 12, but the celebration lasts two years. Get in on the festivities at the Motown Historical Museum (www.motownmuseum.com), the former site of Hitsville, USA. Check out "Studio A," as well as Gordy's upstairs apartment, both outfitted in 1960s décor. Or take a tour of the Fox Theatre (www.olympiaentertainment.com), one of the era's popular venues.
