INSIDER TIPS
READY, BREAK!
LOCAL EXPERTS HELP YOU MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR WEEK AT THE BEACH.
CANCUN, MEXICO
EXPERT: Miguel Rodriguez, artistic director at Coco Bongo nightclub and cabaret
Why are your shows so popular with Spring Breakers?
“We spend months training for each new performance, which is very difficult, particularly when it comes to aerial stunts. When it’s time to take the stage, we have everything down to a science. It’s spectacular.”
Where is the best place to grab a bite?
“Cambalache (www.grupocambalache.com; +52 998-83-0902) is an excellent Argentinean steakhouse.”
What’s your favorite day trip from Cancun?
“I love visiting Tulum (www.tulum.com). It’s very quiet, the sea is spectacular, and they have cenotes (underwater caves) where you can go diving. It’s absolutely beautiful.”
CLEARWATER BEACH, FL
(27 miles from Tampa)
EXPERT: Joe Lain, 21-year veteran of the Clearwater Beach Patrol
What do you like most about living in Clearwater Beach?
“The weather’s incredible. You can golf here nearly every day, and you can take your pick of courses, too.”
What advice would you give to Spring Breakers?
“Check out Caladesi Island [just north of Clearwater]. It’s been called the best beach in the country... and it’s easily accessible. It’s one of those little treasures that only local people know about.”
What are your favorite restaurants?
“Frenchy’s (www.frenchysonline.com) is a great local seafood chain. I also like the Island Way Grill (www.islandwaygrill.com; 727-461-6617) and the Salt Rock Grill (www.saltrockgrill.com; 727-593-7625).”
SAN JUAN,
PUERTO RICO
EXPERT: William Sue-A-Quan, professional surfer and owner of WOW! Surfing School
Where is the best place to surf in San Juan?
“Pine Grove Beach and La Concha Beach. I grew up surfing on both of them. [Pine Grove] is better for beginners—it has an easier wave and no reef, so it’s really easy to surf. La Concha has more power, more turn, and the waves break a little faster.”
Where should foodies refuel? “
The Palm (www.thepalm.com; 787-791-3300) is one of the best steakhouses in the city, but it’s also very expensive. A more aff ordable bet is Metropol (www.metropolpr.com; 787-791-4046). It serves typical Puerto Rican cuisine.”
What’s your favorite day trip from San Juan?
“I love the Bioluminescent Bay (in Vieques). It’s really beautiful, and you can’t see anything else like it anywhere else.”
