Top 10 must-dos in San Antonio

Building on the success of last year's inaugural event...

THE LIST

SAN ANTONIO

1 Luminaria

Building on the success of last year's inaugural event, this celebration of the city's artists, musicians, performers and cultural organizations is even more ambitious, with dance, theater, poetry readings, film and music taking place all day and night on March 14.

2 San Antonio Missions

You're obviously going to visit the Alamo, but don't forget about the city's other missions: San José, San Juan, Concepción and Espada. An 8-mile hike and bike trail goes past each one, but take note: It's not a loop, so the round-trip path is actually 16 miles.

3 El Sol Studios

On the border between the King William Historic District and Southtown, this eclectic gallery is dedicated to Latin and Mexican folk art, featuring a different local artist every month. Also, shop here for handmade cards and jewelry.

4 Hill Country Wineries

These hills (about an hour from San Antonio) are alive with the stomping of grapes. There are about two dozen wineries to tour where you can sip and take in the beautiful scenery. Check the website for special events.

6 Taco Taco Café

When in San Antonio, eat tacos for breakfast. Take your pick from beans and egg, chorizo and egg, potatoes and egg-or go for the taco special, a combo of all three. (Just make sure to have a salad for lunch and dinner.)

7 Discover Your Inner Cowboy

If you want to act like a cowboy (or girl), you gotta dress like one-and the best way to go is custom-made. First: boots. Whether made from kangaroo, ostrich or alligator, each pair at Little's Boots (www.davelittleboots.com) is expertly created. Next: a hat. At Paris Hatters (www.parishatters.com), choose from a variety of styles in straw or felt. Now all you need is a horse and lasso.

8 Japanese Tea Gardens

Also known as the Sunken Gardens, this lush site was created in an old rock quarry in the early 1900s. Walk among plants, lily ponds and koi fish, or take in a show at the adjacent amphitheater.

9 Jim Cullum's Landing

Live jazz fills the air seven days a week at this Riverwalk locale. When not touring, the Jim Cullum Jazz Band performs on the patio, where you can listen as the river flows past.

10 Nine Lives Books

Like books? Like kittens? Then this place is for you-as long as you're not allergic to cats (or books, for that matter). In addition to being south Texas' largest independent peddler of used books, it also has a cat adoption center, so stop by if you're missing Fluffy back home.
