HUSBAND-AND-WIFE CONSULTANTS ANALYZE THE FOUR BASIC TYPES OF WORKERS.

A FORMER MINISTER and school psychologist, respectively, Robert Bolton and his wife Dorothy Grover Bolton know a lot about why people act the way they do. Thirty-seven years ago, they put their knowledge to good use when they founded the consulting firm Ridge Associates.
Through their work in the corporate world, they discovered and identified the dominating personality types of the workplace and how to improve communication between each one, which is the subject of their new book, People Styles At Work…And Beyond.
According to the Boltons, there are two types of behavior: assertiveness and responsiveness. "You put those two dimensions of behavior together in a grid, and you get four styles of people," Robert says. "The key to getting along better with co-workers is to identify their type and then adjust your behavior style slightly." Here are the four common types of workplace personalities:
1 AMIABLES
This personality is focused "a little bit more on spontaneity [than the other types]," Robert says. Although less assertive than some, Amiables are friendly, easygoing and sensitive to other people's feelings.
2 DRIVERS
Drivers are fast-paced, getit-done people. They make fast decisions, speak quickly, walk swiftly and work efficiently. Robert believes that Drivers are "less emotionally expressive than most people."
3 EXPRESSIVES
Expressives are energetic visionaries. They are a "more assertive type," Robert says, but they're generally more people-oriented than task-oriented.
4 ANALYTICALS
Analyticals are perfectionists who set high standards for themselves. They are the quietest of all the styles, and are systematic and well organized. "I am an Analytical," Robert says.
