Political Performer
Mayor Raeanne Presley takes center stage in Branson, MO.

Branson, MO, has more theater seats than Broadway, and around 8 million tourists (about 1,000 times the city's population) enjoy its theme parks, pristine lakes, golf courses and abundant performance venues (there's a reason it's nicknamed the "Live Music Capital of the World") each year.
At the helm of this wholesome city is Mayor Raeanne Presley (no relation to Elvis), former chairman of the Missouri Tourism Commission. She's a member of one of the city's most famous performing families - their show was the first to open on Branson's "Strip" in 1967 - and a star in her own right.
What is the biggest change you've seen since moving to Branson as a young girl in 1968?
"The population is becoming more diverse. As we grow, there is more of a mix of urban and cosmopolitan citizenry along with retirees with varied career skills and backgrounds."
Where do you go to be entertained in the "Live Music Capital of the World"?
"Well, of course I go to the Presleys' Country Jubilee (www.presleys.com). My husband is a second-generation performer (he's the drummer) in the family show and my children have all been involved or performed at one time or another. I like the Liverpool Legends (www.liverpoollegends.com), The Beatles tribute band, because it's music from my generation. I also enjoy SIX (www.thesixshow.com), a show with six brothers who harmonize a cappella and make all the instrumental sounds with their voices. It's really unique. I enjoy seeing special performances at the Mansion Theatre (www.themansiontheatre.com) and the Welk Theater (www.welkbranson.com). I can't wait to see Cathy Rigby in Peter Pan at the Mansion this spring."
What sets Branson's live shows apart from those in other cities?
"There is a unique atmosphere at our shows. Guests love the close interaction they have with the entertainers, and performers enjoy the personal touch with the fans. They shake hands and sign CDs - it's a unique experience that isn't available in most concert-type venues. The fans are very loyal, and because the shows change a couple of times a year, they return again and again."
Describe Branson to someone who has never been there.
"Basically, it's a small-town atmosphere with big-town amenities wrapped up in a bow of Ozarks hospitality. Most guests are surprised at the beautiful rolling hills and terrain. We're kind of isolated, so it's like driving in the country and all of a sudden you are on The Strip - that's our name for Highway 76 - where many of our restaurants, lodging, attractions and show venues are located. It's a mix of neon and nature with video marquees and lots of energy. If you don't like the hustle and bustle, you can have a rustic vacation on one of the lakes with fishing, camping and water sports."
How has Branson grown and evolved throughout its recent history?
"Over the decades, we have continued to reinvent ourselves. People first came to see Marvel Cave (www.bransonsilverdollarcity.com). Then Table Rock Dam was built, and people came to fish and enjoy nature. In the early 1960s, the first shows made their debut.
Now we have Branson Landing (www.bransonlanding.com) with world-class shops and the new Branson Convention Center (www.bransonconvention.com). And Silver Dollar City (www.silverdollarcity.com) is a 55-acre, internationally recognized theme park with more than 30 rides and attractions, and six yearly festivals. We have museums, championship golf courses - something for everyone."
How do you envision the future of Branson?
"I don't have a crystal ball, but we have a reputation as a value destination and continue to attract visitors even in changing economic times. Businesses are growing, and it's a great place to raise a family. People are moving and retiring here because it's beautiful, fun and friendly. We will continue to build on what makes us unique while protecting our natural resources."
