QUINTESSENTIAL

THINGS THAT MAKE YOU GO "EW!"

Founded at a medical college in 1858, the Mütter Museum features more than 20,000 medical curiosities, including a growth removed from Grover Cleveland and a collection of 2,000 objects extracted from patients' throats. It's scientific and fun, especially for those with a high ick-tolerance. www.collphyphil.org/mutter.asp

Thump, Thump
The FRANKLIN INSTITUTE SCIENCE MUSEUM has heart - a giant two-story walk-through heart, to be precise. The immaculately designed ticker, which has delighted kids for more than half a century, would be just the right size for a 220-foot-tall person.

TOP BITES AT READING TERMINAL MARKET

AMERICA'S OLDEST CONTINUOUSLY OPERATING FARMERS MARKET IS FULL OF TASTY TREASURES. DON'T GO HOME WITHOUT TRYING:

- A jar of black raspberry jam from KAUFFMAN'S LANCASTER COUNTY PRODUCE
- Some pickled hot peppers from AJ PICKLE PATCH AND SALADS
- A reuben sandwich from HERSCHEL'S EAST SIDE DELI
- Apple dumplings from DUTCH EATING PLACE
- Anatomically correct chocolate hearts from CHOCOLATE BY MUELLER

A WORLD OF MUSIC

An offshoot of the popular Philly-based "World Café" radio program (broadcast on 195 NPR affiliates nationwide), World Café Live (www.worldcafelive.com) hosts eclectic, noncommercial music concerts in a refurbished factory. It hosts about 700 concerts a year, estimates founder Hal Real, who says he "can't even begin to count" the number of shows he's attended in person.

This month's shows range from Venezuelan funk band Los Amigos Invisibles (June 18) to afrobeat star Femi Kuti (June 26). We asked Real to share his favorite memories from the past five years:

Scottish pop artist KT TUN-STALL: "It was just KT and her percussionist on stage, a few months before she really broke out. There were only 150 people, and we had to bring out extra chairs. She was so touched by the audience response, she actually started crying."

Guitarist SONNY LANDRETH: "The show was scheduled on a night when it was just pouring sideways out, raining and freezing, the kind of night when no one wants to go out. But Sonny's show still went on, and he absolutely blew the roof off the place."

Roots-rocker ALEJANDRO ESCOVEDO: "We've had him play with his rock 'n' roll band, with his acoustic quartet and in just about every configuration… he's come back about seven times. He's a real musician's musician."

BEST SEATS IN THE HOUSE

Philly is home to more than 20 professional theaters hosting some 125 productions annually. Check out this month's best shows:

HYSTERIA Wilma Theatre (www.wilmatheater.org)
This madcap, surrealistic comedy was inspired by a real-life encounter between Sigmund Freud and Salvador Dalí. Through June 14.

THE PRODUCERS Walnut Street Theatre (www.walnutstreettheatre.org)
Mel Brooks' riotous show-biz satire takes the stage at the nation's oldest theater (est. 1809). Through July 19.

SPRING AWAKENING The Academy of Music (www.academyofmusic.org)
Tickets may be hard to come by, but this electrifying coming-of-age rock musical - which swept the Tony Awards in 2007 - is a can't-miss. June 23 to June 28.

HIDDEN TREASURE FILES:

Head to tiny Gallery 182, tucked in the back of the Modern and Contemporary Art Wing, to see some of his most important pieces, including Nude Descending a Staircase (No. 1).
