Street Scene: Philadelphia

THE MEGA-HIP knitwear and vintage boutique Vagabond opened on North Third Street long before the Old City strip was cool. Now, the scene is "absolutely exploding," says Megan Murphy, Vagabond's co-owner. "At least half a dozen boutiques have opened in the past year. And we're all collaborative, not competitive." Here are her favorite North Third Street picks.

1 VAGABOND
37 N THIRD ST

Don't expect consistency at Murphy's store. Current finds include hand-printed craft stationery, Twinkle yarns and Mary Ping canvas designer bags, as well as ultra-local designer goods made by Vagabond's resident collective of hip knitters. "They work out of the back of the store," Murphy says. www.vagabondboutique.com

2 TOP STITCH
54 N THIRD ST

This vintage and handmade accessories boutique recently opened. "Pretty much everything is handcrafted by local designers," says Murphy, who also raves about owner Linda Smyth's inspired-by-nature jewelry, including leather earrings. www.myspace.com/topstitch

3 ART IN THE AGE
116 N THIRD ST

Run by a collective of artists, this gallery features everything from paintings to collections of tomato seeds. "I took my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, and had a nice time," she says, "although we had a quick lesson about not touching the paintings." www.artintheage.com

4 SUGARCUBE
124 N THIRD ST

A recent arrival, this store draws raves for its lovingly curated selection of contemporary fashions. "It has some absolutely beautiful labels, like Steven Alan and A.P.C.," Murphy says. "You can find some gorgeous fabrics there." There's also a stellar vintage clothing selection. www.sugarcube.us

5 LOST & FOUND
133 N THIRD ST

This boutique features a great selection of men's clothes, which makes it something of a rarity in Old City. Guys will find labels like Ben Sherman and OBEY amid the racks of vintage shirts and graphic tees; women will appreciate the cute accessories. "They have some great Orla Kiely bags in vibrant colors," Murphy says. 215-928-1311
