The iconic Hollywood sign-which read "Hollywoodland" when first constructed-was dedicated on July 13, 1923. The 50-foot-tall letters were originally covered in flashing light bulbs. The sign fell into disrepair during the Great Depression and again in the 1960s, but was restored to glory in the late 1970s by an unlikely group of philanthropists including cowboy film star Gene Autry and shock-rocker Alice Cooper.
