Burlington, VT

WITH THE LEAVES CHANGING COLOR, NOW IS THE PERFECT TIME TO TAKE A SCENIC DRIVE IN VERMONT. HERE ARE SOME STOPS TO MAKE ALONG THE WAY.

1 Ice cream for breakfast is an auspicious start to your day, so take Interstate 89 from Burlington straight to the Ben & Jerry's Factory (www.benjerrys.com) in Waterbury. After a tour and tasting, visit the flavor graveyard to contemplate the demise of flavors like lemon peppermint carob chip.

2 Before you hop on scenic Rt 100, stop at Cold Hollow Cider Mill (www.coldhollow.com) to watch cider being made using a rack-and-cloth press from the 1920s. Stock up on fresh jams, pies and syrups.

3 Because nothing is more Vermont-y than a covered bridge, take a detour onto Main Street in the town of Warren. Turn right onto Covered Bridge Road to drive across the Lincoln Gap Bridge. The road will take you back to Rt 100.

Moss Glen Falls
4 Continue driving south through the picturesque Mad River Valley until you arrive in Granville, where a 5-minute hike into the Green Mountain National Forest will bring you to Moss Glen Falls. You may not work off all that ice cream and cider, but it will make a nice postcard (see iPhone app, below).

5 While passing through the Green Mountain National Forest, you saw the sugar maples in their fall finery. Find out what they've got going on inside at the New England Maple Museum (www.maplemuseum.com).

6 By now, you're probably hungry from all that ooh-ing and ahh-ing. A fried cod sandwich from Lakehouse Pub & Grill (www.lakehousepubandgrill.com) on glittering Lake Bomoseen ought to do the trick.

The Inn at
Shelburne Farms
7 Sufficiently sated, you're ready to visit the Robert Frost Interpretive Trail to consider the work of America's favorite New England-loving poet in its natural setting. If you get all teary-eyed, you can always blame it on allergies.

8 You could drive all the way back to Burlington tonight, but then you might have to make your own breakfast tomorrow. Instead, stay at The Inn at Shelburne Farms (www.shelburnefarms.org), where you can sleep in a cozy lakeside room with a fireplace.
