Ice fish

Want to ice fish around the Great Lakes? With rentable shanties from local outfitters and carry-on-sized sonar units, the sport isn’t just for Grumpy Old Men anymore. Tom Zenanko, host of Ice Fishing Today, offers tips for getting started.

1 Drill holes with a hand auger (for ice 1 foot thick or less) or a power auger (for thicker ice). Those with patience can use a hand chisel.

2
Use sonar to see which holes have fish under them.

3
Once you find a hole you like (preferably the one over the most fish), set up your mobile fishing shack.

4
Reel in your big (or small) catch.
