Big Bites

As host of the Travel Channel’s Man v. Food (its third season begins next month), Adam Richman takes on huge gastronomic challenges, from eating a 72-ounce steak in one sitting to braving the hottest curry in the US. “I can’t dunk like LeBron, and I can’t drive like Danica, but I can eat!” he says. Here, he dishes on his most memorable food face-offs.

“The Fire in Your Hole wings at Munchies 420 Café were so unpleasant. The sauce has ghost chilies, which are 100 times hotter than jalapeños. I got two wings down [out of 10] and had to stop.”

“San Francisco Creamery’s Kitchen Sink sundae was a thing of awe and terror. It was a two-gallon sundae with eight scoops of ice cream, three bananas, hot fudge, sprinkles, nuts, cherries and whipped cream. As big as it was, it was also amazing.”

“The 2.5-pound Dagwood sandwich at the Ohio Deli & Restaurant was my favorite sandwich, not because it was delicious, which it was, but because it was my first win—and there’s nothing like the tangy zip of victory.”

“My craziest challenge was The Doughman. It’s a four-person food-and-sport relay race, and you have to do things like mow through a huge sandwich and potato chips, then run two miles, down a bunch of cupcakes, then swim several laps. It’s ridiculous.”

“I ate 180 oysters in under 30 minutes at the Acme Oyster House and still can’t believe I did that. They were so fresh, but I haven’t been able to eat any raw oysters since that challenge.”
