“The last one I downloaded was AroundMe. It finds restaurants, bars and other places that are, well, around you. When you’re visiting cities you’re not familiar with, you want to learn about good places to go, rather than just blindly going out and driv- ing, which I’ve done before. I’ve only used it for restaurants, but other categories include hotels, banks and gas stations.

“If I were to design an app, it would focus on safety. The first thing I look to do when I get to a new city is go for a jog. I usually ask the front desk at the hotel if there is anywhere to run, and how safe it is. An app that could tell you that type of information would be awesome.”

AroundMe available for: iPhone

“Urbanspoon is good for restaurants that other people recommend. When I was in Kansas City on business, I was looking for a seafood restaurant in close proximity to me. I pulled a few up and I read all the ratings for them. So I chose one based on that—Bristol Seafood Grill in downtown Kansas City—and then ordered based on the recommendations. The food was good. I use it pretty much anytime I go somewhere where they haven’t set up a meal for me. I definitely recommend it. If you’re in a place you don’t know, it will give you the local perspective.”

Urbanspoon available for: Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Palm, Symbian, Windows Mobile

“WorldMate is a mobile app that syn- chronizes your flights and itinerary into an on-the-go calendar. And if I’m flying to Milwaukee, it automatically pops up with, ‘Your local time is this,’ and it synchronizes all my meetings for that day. I don’t need to worry about configuring my phone or computer.”

WorldMate available for: Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian

MARIE COLEMAN

PROJECT MANAGER
TRAVELS 2-3 DAYS/MONTH

“I use DriveSafe.ly. If I’m in a rental car and I’m getting text messages or emails such as, ‘Meeting time has changed’ or ‘It’s now in conference room B,’ it will read it to me and I’ll know it before I get to my destination. As opposed to having to pull over and call the person, I get information instantaneously. It will even do text-messaging language, so ‘LOL’ will read ‘laughing out loud.’”

DriveSafe.ly available for: Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Mobile

ERIC HERMAN

“I use the Weather- Bug app so I know what the weather’s going to be like where I’m headed and I can pack accordingly. It’s a great application not only for people who travel a lot, but also if you just need to watch the forecast.”

WeatherBug available for: Android, BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows
