At a Crossroads

The warehouse-filled Crossroads District has been brought back to life, with funky shops and art galleries occupying storefronts. Here’s a look at what the area’s local designers are creating.

BY MARY BLOCH —

1. Hammerpress

110 Southwest Blvd

Whimsical greeting cards and coasters with colorful graphics are just a few of the paper wonders that Kansas City Art Institute alum Brady Vest produces on antique printing presses, for sale at his transformed industrial space. $5.50/card; $8/set of 12 coasters 816-421-1929; hammerpress.net

2. Scarlett Garnet

504 E 18th St, Studio 101

Unconventional, sure. But these mismatched bow-and-arrow earrings will get people talking — and that’s the point of statement-making accessories, after all. Local Garnet Griebel and St. Louis-based Katie Miller handcraft and sell them at their studio/gallery/event space (open by appointment). $38 816-914-5739; scarlettgarnet.com

3. Method.

1529 Grand Blvd

Designed by the local brand Sozni, this plaid pocket square made with 100% pashmina wool was handcrafted by select artisans in Kashmir, India, using a 500-year-old process. It’s available at Method., which was started by three lawyers who wanted to give local designers a venue to display forward-thinking men’s clothing and accessories. $125 816-221-5888; methodkc.com

4. Spool

122 W 18th St

Give your baby girl some love by dressing her with as much style as you do yourself. Pick up this vibrant African-print cotton dress with a removable satin bow at Spool, a tiny boutique where local designers showcase their creations. (Don’t worry, there are some goodies for moms, too). $44 816-842-0228

5. Tomboy Design Studio

1817 McGee St

The “Michelle” trench coat made with orange cut velvet and linen paired with the “Hepburn” pant in wheat linen is just one of the off -the-rack outfits owner and Kansas City Art Institute alum Laura McGrew creates in her shop. Don’t like what you see? She also creates made-to-order designs. $494/coat; $250/pants 816-472-6200; tomboydesign.net
