Main Courses
This three-block area of Main Street just south of the Country Club Plaza is a bustling row of eateries, from make-your-own salad spots to artisan ice cream parlors.
1. BO LING’S
4800 Main St This ornately decorated Chinese restaurant in the Kansas City Board of Trade building has developed a cult following for its weekend dim sum. The plates pile up as diners savor succulent roasted duck, pork buns and all manner of dumplings. 816-7531718; bolings.com
2.THE MIXX
4855 Main St The hardest part about eating at this small fast-casual spot is picking which of the more than 50 “Mixx-ins” to put in your madeto-order salad, wrap or sandwich. Can’t decide? Menu offerings include a Thai salmon salad and vegan curry sweet potato wrap. 816-756-2300; mixxingitup.com
3. SPIN! NEAPOLITAN PIZZA
4950 Main St At this much-loved local chain, diners can create their own gourmet pizza or pick one of the specialties, including the cipolla e chevre with fig marmalade, caramelized onions and goat cheese. The eatery also hosts weekly bike rides; after working up an appetite, satisfy it with 10% off a post-workout meal. 816-561-7746; spinpizza.com
4. GLACÉ ARTISAN ICE CREAM
4960 Main St Chocolatier Christopher Elbow has augmented his candy-making company by creating decadent ice cream, made with seasonal and fresh flavors such as goat cheese with honey, Venezuelan spiced chocolate, salted pretzel and pineapplecilantro sorbet. 816-561-1117; glaceicecream.com
5. ACCURSO’S ITALIAN RESTAURANT
4980 Main St This popular family eatery tops sandwiches, pasta and pizza with meatballs as big as baseballs and spicy homemade sausage. Come early for happy hour on the patio. 816-753-0810; accursos.com
6.THE PEANUT
5000 Main St The bar is always bustling at this hole-in-thewall, but it’s the food that will make you a fan. The Triple BLT is anything but peanut-sized; triple-layered with shredded cheese, it’s the best in town. 816-753-9499; peanutkc.com
7. ANDRÉ’S CONFISERIE SUISSE
5018 Main St This Swiss gem resplendent with national flags hanging from the ceiling is one of the block’s oldies. Ladies who lunch ostensibly flock to the tea room for the quiche, but they’re really in it for the pastries like the chocolate-stuffed macaroons and a superb Linzer torte. 816-561-6484; andreschocolates.com
8. OSTERIA IL CENTRO
5101 Main St Many hearts have been won over the spiedini di pollo (chicken breast in Italian breadcrumbs drizzled with amogia sauce) and veal piccata (with butter, lemon and parsley) at this cozy and intimate date-night spot. 816-561-2369; osteria-ilcentro.com
9. MINSKY’S PIZZA CAFE & BAR
5105 Main St Part of a local chain, this casual pizza joint offers a list of speciality pies (lamb sausage, pesto, sun-dried tomato and spinach, anyone?) and hot sandwiches. Specials are offered daily, including a slice of pizza, side salad and drink for less than $6. 816-5615100; minskys.com
10. EGGTC.
5107 Main St When Gregg Johnson opened this hopping breakfast- and lunchonly spot, he completed a trifecta of restaurants on this small block (along with #9 and #10). If you can get in, you won’t leave hungry. Go for something unconventional, like a frittata with apples, goat cheese, walnuts and red onion chutney or a crepe with guava cream cheese, strawberries, mango sauce, whipped cream and candied pecans. 816-5610116; eggtc-kc.com
