TriBeCa Film Festival New York
These days, film festivals are a dime-a-dozen, but this one is world-famous, just like one of its founders: Robert DeNiro. Attracting over three million people — including many a rumpled indie star — with independent films, panels, free outdoor screenings (April 19-21) and a street fair (April 28), this is a film fest worth waiting in line for. This year kicks off with Five-Year Engagement, featuring Jason Segel and Emily Blunt.

APRIL 19-29

Fiesta San Antonio San Antonio
You'll need a siesta after this fiesta, as the 11-day festival encompasses over 100 events, ranging from parades, concerts and coronations to athletic competitions and art exhibits. This festival, now in its 121st year, is a party with a purpose — a different local non-profit organizes each event and rakes in over $284 million for the Alamo City each year.

APRIL 21-22

Los Angeles Times Festival of Books Los Angeles
Forget Kindles, celebrate the real deal — musty smell, paper cuts and all. This is bookworm heaven, and, attracting over 140,000 bibliophiles, it's one of the biggest and most prestigious book festivals in the country. Come face-to-face with some of your favorite authors — past events have included Judy Blume and T.C. Boyle — for readings, signings, panels and discussions. Bookseller and publisher booths, cooking demonstrations, and poetry readings round out this massive event.

APRIL 21-22

Boston Comic Con Boston
Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Nope, it's the Boston Comic Con, a place where horn-rimmed glasses aren't hipster and the Vulcan salute is as ubiquitous as a handshake. Come for a film festival, gaming events, artist panels with the likes of Al Feldstein and Pa ul Coker Jr. and a costume contest that's bound to be worthy of super powers.

APRIL 30

Queen's Birthday Aruba
Come join the festivities for Queen Beatrix's birthday. Who is that, you ask? (Like you need an excuse to celebrate.) The Queen regent of the Netherlands is also the queen of Aruba, and the island plans on partying it up for her 75th. An official, government ceremony will be followed by sports competitions, kite flying contests and live music all over the island.

New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival New Orleans
A festival that includes Bruce Springsteen (pictured), the Foo Fighters, Florence and The Machine, Zac Brown Band, John Mayer and Herbie Hancock, plus master artisans that create cultural treasures at the Louisiana Folklife Village is a festival that's just too good to miss.

Wack Attack

Don't get tricked into any lame April Fool's Day events.

Rochester, NY

Rochester Philharmonic April Fools' Concert
The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra shows that it doesn't take itself too seriously, especially not on April Fool's Day, with its orKIDstra show, which involves holiday-particular musical pranks and jokes for the whole family.

Golden, CO (35 miles from Denver)

Victorian April Fool's Day
People of the late nineteenth century were not as straight-laced as your history professor might have you think, and, if you stop by the Astor House Museum (original proprietor Seth Lake was a notorious prankster), you might just find some devious Victorian pranks coming your way.

Ann Arbor, MI (33 miles from Detroit)

April Fool's Day Twinkie Run
You can lie to your competitors that your breathlessness is from laughter, not burnout, as you inhale soon-to- be-discontinued Twinkies at various mile checkpoints at this second annual and decidedly bizarre local tradition.
