Parve for the Course
An only-in-New-York-story about how three Jewish machers turned religious traditions into kosher ice cream flavors and scooped the world of delectable desserts.
What happens when two generations of Jewish women stand around a plate of rugelach noshing? Ice cream inspiration and the beginnings of Chozen Ice Cream — six flavors inspired by traditional Jewish holidays. Spend your summer sampling Apples and Honey (a nod to Rosh Hashanah), Chocolate Gelt (the prize Chanukah chocolate) or Matzoh Crunch (vanilla laced with Chocolate and carmel covered matzoh). While not strictly Parve (non-dairy kosher foods), the ice cream is kosher. Meredith Fisher, her mother Ronne and her sister Isabelle Fisher Krishana started producing their concoction in a Brooklyn factory and selling the results to gourmet superstores like Whole Foods and Zabar's. "This is the only place in the country where an ice cream like this could exist," Fisher says, nodding to the combination of Brooklyn's artisanal food movement and the long-standing Jewish communities. "It's about bringing our love of Jewish culture, and how it's related to food, to the masses." So, next time you're choosing a dessert, why not stick to the chosen people's choice.
